Wage Withholding
A procedure by which scheduled deductions are automatically made from wages or income to pay a debt, such as child support. Wage withholding often is incorporated into the child support order and may be voluntary or involuntary. The provision dictates that an employer must withhold support from a non-custodial parent's wages and transfer that withholding to the appropriate agency (the Centralized Collection Unit or State Disbursement Unit). Also know as income withholding.
Welfare Reform
The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) of 1996--Welfare Reform-overhauled the nation's welfare system requiring work in exchange for time-limited assistance. The law contains strong work requirements, a performance bonus to reward states for moving welfare recipients into jobs, comprehensive child support enforcement and supports for families moving from welfare to work including increased funding for child care and guaranteed medical coverage. Tough child support measures under welfare reform include: a national new hire reporting system; streamlined paternity establishment; uniform interstate child support laws; computerized statewide collections and tough new penalties.
Workers Compensation Appeals Board Match System
Collects workers' compensation lump sum payments owed to non-custodial parents who owe past-due child support.
Writ of Execution
A court order telling the sheriff or marshal to seize property to satisfy a court judgment.
